The tool
TranscribeLocally is free to use, with no account and no usage limits. It runs entirely in your browser: your files are never uploaded and we never see them or the transcripts they produce.
Your content is yours
We claim no rights over anything you transcribe or anything the tool produces from it. We could not, in any practical sense — we never receive it. Transcripts, subtitles and exports are yours to use however you like.
What you are responsible for
By using this site you confirm that you are entitled to process the recordings you transcribe. In particular:
- Recording law. Whether a conversation could lawfully be recorded varies by country and, in the United States, by state — some jurisdictions require every party to consent. This tool works with a file you already have and expresses no view on how you obtained it.
- Consent and confidentiality. Any undertakings you gave to the people recorded remain yours to keep. Local processing removes one disclosure risk; it does not change what you promised.
- Onward use. A transcript is far easier to copy and circulate than audio. How it is stored, shared and retained is your decision and your responsibility.
Accuracy is not guaranteed
Automatic speech recognition makes mistakes, and it makes them fluently — a wrong word looks exactly like a right one. Names, numbers, doses, dates and anything said over crosstalk are the usual failures. Verify anything you intend to rely on against the audio. Do not treat output from this or any automatic tool as a record without reading it.
This is explicitly not a certified transcript. Court records, depositions, regulated clinical documentation and anything requiring attestation need a qualified human transcriptionist.
Provided as-is
The tool is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from use of this site — including inaccurate transcripts, lost work from a closed tab, or decisions taken on the basis of the output. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Because nothing is stored on any server, a transcript lost when a tab closes cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. Export anything you want to keep.
Availability
This is a free tool maintained by one person. It may change, break or become unavailable without notice. There is no service level and no support commitment, though genuine bug reports are welcome.
Third-party components
The speech models are ONNX conversions of OpenAI’s Whisper, whose model cards state the Apache 2.0 licence; inference uses ONNX Runtime Web (MIT). Both are served from this domain rather than a third-party host. Their licences govern those components.
Acceptable use
Do not use this site to process recordings you have no right to process, or in any way that breaks the law where you are. Since everything runs on your device we have no technical means to enforce this — which makes it entirely a matter of your own conduct.
